I was delighted that the U.S. Supreme Court correctly ruled that the right to bear arms is a fundamental right that applies to the states, not just the federal government. This is the second good gun rights decision in recent years.
We Constitution-loving conservatives have always known that we have a right to bear arms. It is just nice to have the Supreme Court validate it and shut up the liberals who oppose gun rights (but never seem to oppose the government’s encroaching upon our rights).
What is disturbing is that the vote was 5-4. Fundamental rights should be clear and not based on political motivations. Luckily for us, the constitutionalists were in the majority this time around.
But with President Obama at the helm and the likes of Solicitor General Elena Kagan up for the Court, we could easily have had a different outcome. Which should scare all of us.
Lawyers will argue that precedent will protect such decisions. While that works with beloved liberal decisions–think Roe v Wade–note that in less than twenty years sodomy, which is now so popular, became a right (from Bowers to Lawrence).
So our rights are not safe.
The moral of the story is, our rights hang in the balance every day and our liberty must be jealously guarded and elections matter!!!
Remember this in November and in 2012.

Great piece! I’m so relieved that SCOTUS got this one right. As you’ve said, we absolutely have to get rid of Kagan. She’s young and dangerous. She believes the courts should make law.
