Live from CPAC: Day One

I am reporting live from CPAC after the first day of the conservative conference. It was a day awash in great speakers who tried to inspire us in the face of a most daunting challenge–defeating President Barack Obama.  I will share the highlights.

The day started with the wonderful Senator from South Carolina, Jim DeMint, a true believer. He should run for president but I can understand why he cannot be bothered getting into a campaign where the liberal media attack Republicans but let Democrats walk.

The double standard is sickening.

DeMint discussed the history of the Republic and explained why compromise does not work for parties whose ideas are polar opposites. He likened it to a compromise between the Super Bowl champions, the New York Giants, and the defeated New England Patriots. They have different goals and they must oppose each other; their job last Sunday was not to compromise but to triumph.

And so it is for those who love America and what it represents and those who want America to become a Third World nation. Second to Russia, China and other emerging powers. Akin to Europe.

We conservatives don’t want that.

We next heard from Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida who pointed out most Americans are conservative and thus share our values. Liberals call themselves progressive and anything else but liberal. They are not proud of their ideology. He pointed out no Democrat wants to imitate President Jimmy Carter but all Republicans trip over themselves to earn the mantle of President Ronald Reagan, the top conservative of our time.

He pointed out that “being an American is a blessing but also a responsibility.” Liberals cannot cope with the idea of blessings. They might have to acknowledge God Who is the One bestowing the blessings.

Herman Cain was a hit–I wish he was still in the race! He talked about his plans to pursue his 9-9-9 tax plan. He encouraged us to stay informed, stay involved and stay inspired.

If he were still running for president, it would be that much easier to be inspired. O, if only one of the remaining candidates had a personality!!

The last speaker worth noting was Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. He pointed out that President Obama’s administration borrows $40,000 a second.

Think about that. $40,000. Every second.

He warned that this kind of borrowing cannot be sustained. It may buy him votes in the upcoming election but sooner or later it will fall apart.

He is right. We are borrowing too much and producing too little. Too many of us are dependent on the government. He said 47% of Americans do not pay federal income tax.

These numbers are not sustainable.

Tomorrow will feature the men seeking the presidential nomination. We shall see how they respond to the opening day’s speakers’ ideas. And how the audience of true believers respond.

A big day for Rick, Mitt and Newt. Ron is not here this year.

A great place to be if one is a right-thinking, God-fearing, America-loving conservative patriot! Which is why I am here!
